When you have the task of getting a group of people from A to B, for example a sports team, a band or even a group of friends, a minibus will probably be your best option.
The definition of a minibus is a vehicle that can carry 9 – 16 passengers which doesn’t include the driver. So a minibus bridges the gap between a car, which can legally seat up to five people and a coach which usually seats 15 people or more.
All driving in the UK requires a licence and driving a minibus is no exception. To drive a minibus in the UK you need a D1 entitlement on your licence. This was issued automatically to people but in 1997 the rules changed.
The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency says that drivers with licences issued before 1997 can drive a minibus of up to 17 passengers (including the driver) as long as it is not for hire or reward if they are over 21.
If your licence does not have a D1 entitlement then you can still drive a minibus under certain circumstances. You can drive a minibus with up to 16 passengers if:
i) you drive on behalf of a non commercial body for social purposes but not for hire or reward, unless operating under a permit; ii) you are aged 21;
iii) you have held a car (category B) licence for at least 2 years;
iv) you are providing your service on a voluntary basis; and
v) the minibus maximum weight is not more than 3.5 tonnes excluding any specialist equipment for the carriage of disabled passengers. Minibuses up to 4.25 tonnes will be permitted in certain circumstances.
vi)if you are aged 70 and over, you are able to meet the health standards for driving a vehicle (i.e. minibus) which comes within the D1 class;
If you meet these rules there are two further rules you must comply with:
• you may not receive any payment; and
• you must not tow a trailer (of any size).
